CHAPTER THIRTEEN

On the way home, David shifted the ancient gears of the yellow Chevy, thinking he stood out like a school bus moving along through traffic. Checking the rearview mirror, he wondered if he was being watched right now. He glanced toward the Desert Valley Clinic and saw lights on.

Whirling the old truck into the parking lot, he thought he’d check around, just in case. But after what had happened hours earlier at Whitney’s house, he planned to be very careful.

The front door was locked tight, so he walked around back to one of the big windows and saw Dr. Pennington in an exam room with a teenage boy. The kid was dirty, his pants torn, and he was bleeding from his left leg.

David checked the back door. Locked. So he knocked loudly.

Dr. Pennington opened the door, a surprised frown on his face. “Evans, what are you doing here?”

“I saw a light burning. Thought I’d see if everything was okay.”

“Just get in here now,” the gruff doctor said, motioning to the last exam room near the door while his gaze scanned the parking lot. “I’ve got a problem.”

David turned toward the examining room. He might not like the doctor, but David had an obligation to help him as needed.

The doctor waved a gloved hand toward the young man writhing on the table. “He needs stitching, and I need you to assist.”

David noticed the kid’s fearful glance, his face twisted with pain. “What happened?”

Dr. Pennington gave David a stern stare. “We don’t ask questions around here. We just do what we can.”

“Looks like a knife wound,” David said, memories of his first day in Desert Valley still fresh. “Should we report it?”

“Already did,” Dr. Pennington replied on a tart note. “But the kid won’t say anything. Can’t press charges if we don’t know what happened. He’s afraid to talk.”

He shot the kid a hard stare. The teen looked frightened and then lowered his gaze.

David took mental notes while he helped the doctor clean and stitch the deep gash slashing across the kid’s left upper leg. This boy needed to go to the ER at the hospital. “Did you get into a fight?”

The teen ignored him, his jaw tight, his dark eyes darting here and there. He looked as if he could be high on something. Or maybe the doctor had given him something.

“He probably can’t speak much English,” Dr. Pennington said under his breath. “We do what we can, when we can. Best to keep your nose clean. Ask too many questions around here and you might live to regret it.”

David couldn’t decide if the scared kid was Latino or Native American or a mixture of both. But he had a sneaking suspicion the kid could understand everything they were saying.

When they were finished, the teen sat up and grabbed his bloody, dirty shirt. That was when David noticed the tattoo on his scrawny back.

It looked exactly like the symbol he’d had trouble remembering from the train attack. Was
